You might be wondering who I am and why I’ve started a personal blog. Well, let’s chat!
I’ve had a lot of stuff happen in my life. I’m a single mom of a teenage boy. I’m an orphan after losing my brother to esophagus cancer (6 days after my son was born), my Mom to brain cancer 2 years later, and my Dad to a massive heart attack 2 years after that.
Then, after 9 years as an SVP in Supply Chain Management at a Fortune 500 company, I was given the opportunity to take a huge step in my career and become a corporate sales leader and coach in the hospitality industry. Life was good and I was in my element and thriving.
In January 2019, at the height of my career, my company completed a re-organization of the senior leadership team and my position was eliminated. I was devastated. No, I mean dev-ah-state-ed! After a very short break, I aggressively started looking for a job. There were a few good leads and some great interviews, but they all ended in “you need to relocate” or “you’re overqualified" or "we've decided to go with an internal candidate."
After 6 months, I had lost every ounce of faith in myself. I hit the floor and couldn’t peel myself up. I slept all the time. I honestly couldn’t find any positivity in my life. I was in a bad stage of my relationship with my fiancé and I still hadn’t found a job. And I was still on the floor.
I'm not telling you this for any kind of pity party. I'm telling you this because shit happens in life. And you don't have control over the timing or the amount you can handle at once.
In November 2019, I met up with a friend while I was traveling in Phoenix and she said something to me that really stuck. She said, “I don’t know who you are. The Michelle I know never let anything rattle her. You are the most confident, put together person I’ve ever met.” Me? I couldn’t see it. She recommended a book for me to read. I thought, why not. So I ordered it up on Amazon and started reading a few pages each morning. The book was "Super Attractor" by Gabby Bernstein.
Friend, it changed my life. The more I read, the stronger I felt. By the time I finished that book, I had picked myself up off the floor and was starting to dust myself off. I kept reading more books from inspirational authors and realized I was not alone. Shit happens. And it really does happen to other people too!
I started sharing my learnings with some of my friends and I started sharing my inspiration and the realness of life with my social network. One day, I received a note from a previous colleague that said, "Dear Michelle, thank you for all your posts! It really helps me to recover mentally!"
And that is why I started this personal blog. Life can be really unfair at times and at some of our worst moments, we can feel very alone. And there will be times in our lives that we hit the floor and can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel.
But my words to you are, “Yes, there is a good reason to pull your shit together. You are the reason. Get off the floor.”
I love you friend. You ARE worth it and I'm right here cheering you on. You've got this!
I am fortunate that I've grown further in my career and even took a leap to try something out of my wheelhouse, a startup. It was... an experience. It taught me a few great lessons. 1.) I'm not the entrepreneurial type, I am better suited in a corporate role; 2.) When making decisions about your career, trust no one but yourself; and 3.) Even when you think you've lost it all, there are great lessons to be learned from your experiences.
Today I am stronger than ever, I'm living a life that is filled with love and positive energy, and I'm continuing to look forward at all the good that is still to come. I can't wait to get back into a leadership role where I can thrive again and grow myself and my team to new levels of success.
I've got this!
